The current Statewide Naloxone Standing Order for Pharmacists will expire July 31, 2023. The new standing order will be in effect August 1, 2023, through July 31, 2025.
While new training is not required, pharmacy re-enrollment is. If an enrolled pharmacy fails to renew, staff pharmacists previously dispensing naloxone under the standing order will no longer be able to dispense naloxone without a prescription. Although naloxone is set to go over the counter later this year, ForwardHealth encourages providers to re-enroll to keep all forms of naloxone widely accessible.
Pharmacy providers who signed their existing standing order before July 15, 2023, must re-enroll before August 1, 2023, to prevent any lapse in coverage. ForwardHealth encourages pharmacy providers to complete re-enrollment as soon as possible. (Providers unsure if they have the current standing order should check the effective date. The new standing order has an effective date of August 1, 2023.).
The Statewide Naloxone Standing Order for Pharmacists is issued pursuant to Wis. Stat. § 448.037, which permits physicians to issue a standing order to one or more persons authorizing the dispensing of an opioid antagonist. This standing order authorizes pharmacists to dispense naloxone and devices for naloxone administration pursuant to procedures outlined in the order.
More information on the standing order may be found on the Dose of Reality: Resources for Professionals page of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services website.
Providers can send questions to dhsopioids@dhs.wisconsin.gov.
ForwardHealth appreciates providers' participation in the Statewide Naloxone Standing Order for Pharmacists and their continued service to the people of Wisconsin.
